1,786 million metric tonnes is the total amount of greenhouse gas emissions that came from transportation in the US alone, which is the estimated equivalent of emissions from the entire country of Russia. 
Commuting back and forth to work can have such a large impact on the environment that the effects were truly seen during the pandemic.
With the pandemic restricting people to a hybrid working schedule, this has had an impressive impact on global emissions with total daily emissions decreasing by 17% by April 2020 compared with 2019.
The International Energy Agency noted this decline as the largest annual decline since World War II —the equivalent of removing the EU's entire annual CO2e output!
